Mission Trips to Kenya & Uganda – February 2019
We recently returned from mission trips to Kenya and Uganda. We have been to Kenya 4 times now, to various places such as Nairobi, Kisii, and Kisumu. This was our 2nd time to Uganda, and we have now had 43 mission trips in the last 5 years. As usual we experienced a great deal of spiritual warfare, especially at the beginning of our time in Kenya and also in Uganda.
The first missions week was in Kisumu Kenya. It took 2 days to fly to Nairobi, and then on the 3rd day we took an 8 hour bus ride to Kisumu. Kisumu is located in the western part of Kenya on Lake Victoria, and is a city of 550,000 people. We worked with Pr. David Chu Chu and Pr. Isaac and the Evangelical Lutheran Church for 2 days, and also with Jared and others from Scripture Union Kenya the rest of the time.
On weekdays we did our Quality Of Life outreach project in schools. The main goal of the project is to share the Gospel with all of the students and teachers in the school, and we hope with the help of our ministry partners that the students will take the Gospel to their families and beyond. We also speak about how to have the high quality of life that God wants them to have. We speak about 3 parts of their lives, the Body, the Soul (mind, feelings/emotions, dreams & goals), and the Spiritual Life, and how they need to take care of every part to have a high quality of life and a good future.
I preached at the Evangelical Lutheran Church on Sunday, to encourage and challenge every member to actively participate in God’s mission of sharing the Gospel and making disciples. We also had many opportunities to share Christ with people at the hotel, and in stores & restaurants… God did many great things during the missions week in Kisumu. We spoke in 12 schools during the week, and a great number of students and teachers responded to the Gospel message and repented of their sins & committed their lives to follow Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
After Kisumu we took a bus to the Kenya Uganda border at Busia. On the Uganda side of the border our friend and ministry partner Gideon from Scripture Union Uganda picked us up and took us the rest of the way to Mbale Uganda. Scripture Union Uganda does a variety of ministry activities in schools and communities, including training church members to do children’s & school ministries, Bible studies and Bible values classes, Bible clubs for students, youth camps, and life skills training in the community.
We worked in the city of Mbale and in the surrounding villages of eastern Uganda. Mbale is a city with a population of approx. 100,000 people. On weekdays we spoke in 11 schools in Mbale and eastern Uganda to share the Gospel. Once again a great number of students & teachers repented and committed their lives to follow Jesus. We also had many opportunities to share Christ with people as we were going around Mbale at the hotel, and in restaurants, stores,… On Saturday we led a People Sharing Jesus missions & evangelism training seminar for churches in Mbale. 35 people from 4 churches participated in the training.
On Sunday we took a 14 hour bus from Mbale Uganda to Nairboi Kenya, and on Monday night we started our trip back to the US. We had a 10 hour layover in Amsterdam, so we had a chance to tour the city for a few hours. We finally made it back home on Wednesday afternoon.
God did many great things on the mission trips to Kenya and Uganda, and we praise Him for all that He did. We give Him all of the glory and honor and praise. Overall we spoke in 23 schools in Kenya and Uganda, we led a missions & evangelism training for churches in Mbale Uganda, and Kevin preached in a church in Kisumu Kenya. More than 10,600 people repented of their sins, placed their faith in Jesus, and committed their lives to follow Him, including 52 teachers and 1 school director.
These mission trips to Kenya and Uganda were the hardest trips out of the 43 mission trips we have had, with a lot of spiritual warfare, long travel, and difficult conditions (it was 100° F almost every day with no AC). They were also by far the most fruitful trips we have had. We are exhausted, but we are thrilled to have seen God at work and the many lives and souls He touched. God truly is great and He is doing great things in the world ! Once again we saw the reality and truth of Jesus’ words in Matthew 9:37 – “The harvest is great, but the workers are few.”
Nancy and I want to thank you for your prayers for us and for the people we shared the Gospel with in Kenya and Uganda. Your prayers helped to make a great impact on the lives of many people.
