8 Steps To Leading A Person To Christ
8 Steps To Leading A Person To Christ
Leading someone to Christ typically involves several steps to help them understand the Gospel. And for the person to make a personal commitment to Jesus. And then to begin the important process of discipleship if the person accepts Christ.
Sharing Christ with others is often a difficult and intimidating thing for Christians to do. But it does not have to be. We need to understand that it is our job simply to be the faithful witness and share the Gospel message with others.
And that God and the Holy Spirit will convict the person of sin. And then convince them that they have a broken relationship with God, and that are heading towards eternal punishment for their sins. It is also the Holy Spirit’s job to convince them that they need a Savior, and that only Jesus can save them.
We simply need to do our part, and faithfully lovingly share the Gospel message with others. And we can be certain that God and the Holy Spirit will then do their part, and take care of the results.
8 Steps To Leading A Person To Christ
Here are the 8 steps in leading a person to Christ. The only way we will fail in God’s kingdom work and mission of reaching the lost is if we do not do our part. Our part is simply to be faithful witnesses and messengers of the Good News.
1. START THE CONVERSATION
Establish trust and a genuine connection with the person. Be a good listener and show love and care, which often helps to create an opportunity to share Christ.
*The goal of our conversations is to share Jesus
*Use FIRM tool – Ask about Family, Interests, Religious backgrond -> Gospel Message. These are typically subjects most people will be comfortable talking to you about. Also, when you ask the person about these things, it shows that you care and are willing to listen to them.
*Before you share with someone, always pray first. And depend on the Holy Spirit to lead you and empower you to share.
*Ask permission to share the message. Always share love and respect for the other person. If they do not want you to share with them, respect them and do not try to force it.
*When someone gives you permission, you can proceed confidently to share the Gospel, knowing it was God who opened the door for the opportunity.
2. SHARE JESUS AND THE GOSPEL
When God opens the door and gives you an opportunity, you can know that God is at work. And that God will empower you to share the Gospel.
You should pray daily for opportunities to share the Gospel with others. God will send you and use you in His kingdom work of reaching the lost. Here are some important things to remember when sharing.
*We must share with sincerity, love, and respect
*Remember that all people are precious to God & dearly loved
*Use the Gospel tract or another method you like and are comfortable with
*Using Bible Verses is important. There is great power in God’s Word and in the Gospel message.
8 Steps To Leading A Person To Christ
After sharing the Gospel, you should always give them an opportunity to respond to repent, put their faith in Jesus, and commit their lives to Him as their Lord and Savior. It is important to give them an opportunity to do this if they are ready. But we must never try to force the issue or try too hard to produce results. We need to leave the results in God’s hands.
3. ASK IF HE/SHE IS READY AND WOULD LIKE TO PRAY/REPENT/ACCEPT CHRIST
*Do not try to force or manipulate an outcome
*Depend on the Holy Spirit
*The Holy Spirit produces the fruits and results – not us
4.BEFORE PRAYING – REVIEW THE REQUIREMENTS FOR SALVATION IN GOD’S WORD
THE REQUIREMENTS FOR SALVATION IN GOD’S WORD
This is an important step. We need to make sure the person understands what it takes to truly have a restored relationship with God. And that they are ready to repent, believe, and make a commitment to follow Jesus as their Lord and Savior. It is not just simply repeating a prayer that saves a person.
Mark 1:15 – The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and Believe the good news!
1) Repent – going one way, and turning around and going the opposite way. Turn from living in sin and for self, and turn back to God. To live for God, to please and follow Him.
2) Believe the good news – put all your faith and trust and hope in Jesus – not religion or church or good works… Not believing in your mind that Jesus exists
John 1:12 – to all who recieve him (Jesus), to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.
3) Recieve Jesus as Lord (follow & obey Jesus & His word and ways) and Saviour (forgives and takes away your sins and punishment; gives you a restored relationship & peace with God, and eternal life)
8 Steps To Leading A Person To Christ
If the person understands and is ready to repent, believe, and commit to follow Jesus, then you can help and guide them to talk to God and do these things.
5. GUIDE/HELP THE PERSON TO PRAY
*Gospel tracts usually have a prayer
*This is a very special moment for you and the new believer. You discover that one of the greatest moments of joy that God will give you in your life is when you have the privilege of helping someone else to know Jesus and their personal Lord and Savior.
*To be part of God’s work to bring salvation to others is pure joy
*Prayer – you can say the prayer 1 line at a time, and have the person repeat the prayer (sincerely)
6. HELP THE PERSON HAVE ASSURANCE OF SALVATION
Satan will being to attack the new Christian. It is very important to help he or she to understand that if they truly made a commitment to follow Jesus, then they are truly saved. And that even when they mess up and sin, they will not or cannot lose their salvation. Sin will break their fellowship with God, but when we confess our sins God will forgive us and this will restore our fellowship with Him.
But we will never lose our salvation. We will never lose what God has given us as a gift of His grace.
*1 John 5:12-13 “He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. These things I write to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.”
The work “know” in this verse means to know with 100% certainty. There is no doubt about it.
8 Steps To Leading A Person To Christ
If you get the privilege of helping and leading a person to Christ, the 2nd part of God’s mission kicks in immediately. The first part of God’s mission is to share the Gospel and help people to know Christ as their Lord and Savior. The 2nd part of the mission is to make disciples, as per Matthew 28:19-20 (the Great Commission).
It is important to begin the process right away of teaching and helping the new believer to grow closer to Jesus and more like Him. And to grow to become a faithful and fruitful disciple of Jesus.
7. SECOND PART OF THE MISSION – DISCIPLE & TEACH THE NEW BELIEVER
*Matthew 28:19-20 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”
*It is important to start helping and teaching/guiding the new believer right away
*He/she is a baby in the faith and needs people to love, encourage, and teach him/her
*Discipleship is investing our time in the precious one’s life, and helping to grow closer to Jesus and more like Him.
8. FOLLOW-UP AND DISCIPLESHIP
After the joy of leading a person to Christ and then initiating the teaching and discipleship process, it is important for you and others to do the important work of follow up. And continuation of the discipleship process.
Follow up and continuation, done in love, are vitally important for a new believer to grow. Perhaps you are not a teacher in your church. But you can still love, encourage, pray for, and help the new believer in their walk with Jesus.
*Continue to love, pray for, and invest time in his/her life
*Stay in touch with the person
*Don’t just invite them to church, bring the person with you
*Small groups are good for discipleship– many people are more comfortable in a small group
It is a wonderful privilege and honor to be part of God’s kingdom work and mission. And to be called, sent, and used by God in this mission. I pray that more of us will be faithful and respond to God’s call and commands for all of us to participate in what He is doing in the world.
