God’s Wonderful Promises – Forgiveness
God’s promises for forgiveness in the Bible reveal His unwavering willingness to pardon sins and restore relationships with those who genuinely repent. Throughout Scripture, God offers forgiveness as a gift of grace, emphasizing His compassion and mercy.
God’s forgiveness is often tied to repentance, as seen in 1 John 1:9, where the promise is, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” This highlights God’s readiness to forgive those who sincerely turn to Him in repentance.
The ultimate act of forgiveness is revealed through Jesus Christ. Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross provides forgiveness for all who believe in Him, as stated in Ephesians 1:7: “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.” The promise of forgiveness is offered freely, not because of anything we have done, but because of God’s mercy and Christ’s atoning work.
In Matthew 6:14-15, Jesus teaches that forgiveness from God is connected to how we forgive others: “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” This underscores the relational aspect of forgiveness, where receiving God’s forgiveness compels us to extend forgiveness to others.
Ultimately, God’s promises for forgiveness offer hope and healing. Assuring that no sin is too great for His mercy and that reconciliation with God is always possible through Jesus Christ.
God’s Wonderful Promises – Forgiveness
As we learned in Part 1 of God’s Wonderful Promises, God always does what He says and promises. Because of God’s perfect character and perfect faithfulness, God’s promises are actually guarantees. Whatever God says or promises is guaranteed by God to happen. You can always count on God to fulfill His word and promises.
In Part 2 of God’s Wonderful Promises we looked at God’s promises and truths about salvation and eternal life.
Now we will look at God’s promises for forgiveness. Many Christians struggle with guilt after sinning. And many have a hard time forgiving themselves. Even long after God has already forgiven them. This self guilt is a false guilt that does not come from God. It comes straight from our enemy Satan. This false self guilt can rob you of your joy and peace. And it can also inhibit your intimate fellowship with God.

Confess And God Promises To Forgive
God promises to forgive you in His Word. In 1 John 1:9 God promises to forgive you, if you confess your sins to Him. Confess means to agree with God that what you did was a sin personally against God. And it means to sincerely be sorry that you personally sinned against God, and to repent. Meaning you will turn away from the sin.
Psalm 51:4 – “Against You, You only, I have sinned and done what is evil in Your sight. So that You are justified when You speak and blameless when You judge.”
Not only will God forgive you for your sin if you confess, He also promises to cleanse and purify you from unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9 – ” If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous, so that He will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
God’s Wonderful Promises – Forgiveness
Many of God’s promises about forgiveness require an action on our part first. Before we can be forgiven, we must first forgive others. That is the condition to receive God’s promise of forgiveness.
Mark 11:25 – “And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you for your offenses.”
Matthew 6:14 – “For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”
Luke 6:35-37 “But love your enemies and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil people. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Do not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

More Of God’s Wonderful Promises – Forgiveness
The previous verses show us that we need to forgive others in order to receive God’s forgiveness for our sins. The following verses and promises require us to go even further in our relationships with others.
In order to receive forgiveness and mercy, we need to show mercy to others. Even people that persecute us or mistreat us. And we need to show compassion to others. And not just to those who show us compassion.
Matthew 5:44-45 “But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may prove yourselves to be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.”
Romans 12:20 – “Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written: “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. But if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”
Luke 6:38 – “Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.
