In Revelation 1 John has a vision of Jesus and writes a description of what he saw. John is in exile on the island of Patmos for being a faithful witness for Jesus. In Revelation 2 and 3 Jesus has John send letters to 7 churches in Asia Minor. Each church was an existing church in Asia Minor at the time of John’s exile around 95AD. But each letter has applications in our modern day lives and churches.
In Revelation 4 we saw John’s vision or visit to God’s throne. In Revelation 5 we saw the scroll with 7 seals. And that the Lamb, Jesus, was the only One worthy to receive and open the scroll. The scroll represents God’s will and the deed or title of the universe.
Only Jesus is worthy to receive and open the scroll. And to bring on God’s wrath and punishment for Satan, his demons, and for sinners that refuse to repent and believe in Jesus.
Then in Revelation 6 we saw the Lamb, Jesus, open the first 6 of 7 seals of the scroll. Revelation 6 is the beginning of the 7 year Tribulation, and shows a progression through the first half of the Tribulation and into the 2nd half, known as the Great Tribulation period. And of God’s judgement and punishment of Satan, his demons, and anyone who rebels against God and refuses to repent and bow down to Jesus.
In Revelation 7 we saw a continuation of John’s vision of heaven and God’s throne. Revelation 7 is a break between the opening of the first 6 seals in Revelation 6 and the 7th and final seal in Revelation 8. And we saw 4 angels and the 4 winds of the earth, 144,000 from the 12 tribes of Israel, and a great multitude.
In Revelation 8 we saw Jesus open the 7th seal of the scroll, which is the start of the 7 trumpet judgements of God. This takes place in the 2nd half of the 7 year tribulation, which is known as the Great Tribulation.
Then in Revelation 9 we saw the terrifying 5th and 6th trumpet judgements that God pours out on His enemies. The people that still refused to repent and bow down to Jesus as Lord and Savior.
And in Revelation 10 we saw John’s vision of a mighty angel with an opened scroll with a voice of 7 thunders. This takes place in the break between the 6th and 7th trumpet judgements.
Then in Revelation 11 we saw a continuation of John’s vision of the break between the 6th and 7th trumpet judgements in the final 3 1/2 years of the tribulation, known as the Great tribulation. We studied the 2 witnesses from God in Jerusalem, and the 7th trumpet judgement.
In Revelation 12 we saw a woman, a dragon, and a baby. The break between the 6th and 7th trumpet judgement continued in John’s vision. And John introduced 3 more main characters in the tribulation, and in the war between Satan and God.
Then in Revelation 13 John introduced 2 more of the main characters or players in the tribulation, and in the war between Satan and God. The beast of the sea or the antichrist, and the best from the earth, the false prophet.
In Revelation 14 we studied John’s vision of the 144,000 witness in the tribulation. And 3 angels flying high in the sky with 3 different messages. And more details about the day of the Lord and God’s wrath.
Next in Revelation 15 we study how John the 7 angels with 7 bowl judgements or plagues getting ready to pour them out on the world.
In Revelation 16 we studied the final 7 bowl judgements or plagues of God’s wrath. These will be the ending of God’s wrath and judgements being poured out onto the world and on those that will refuse to repent and turn to Christ.
Then in Revelation 17 we looked at John’s vision of a prostitute and the beast. The world’s false religion that deceives many people into turning away for God, and worshiping and following the antichrist.
Next in Revelation 18 we studied about the antichrist’s world kingdom and Babylon. Specifically the antichrist’s global government and economic system of commerce.
Next in Revelation 19 we finally saw Jesus return to earth as He promised He would. And the much anticipated battle of Armageddon.
Then in Revelation 20 we will study the 1000 year kingdom of Jesus on earth. And who will be with Him in the kingdom. And then we will see the ultimate destiny of Satan. And those that choose to refuse to repent and follow and worship Jesus.
Now in Revelation 21 we will study the new heaven and the new earth. And the capitol city of the new heaven and earth, the new Jerusalem.
Revelation 21 – New Heaven And Earth, New Jerusalem
A New Heaven And Earth
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.” – Revelation 21:1
After John saw Satan thrown into the lake of fire and the great white throne judgement at the end of Revelation 20, next he sees a new heaven and a new earth. He mentions that the first or original heaven and earth passed away, or were no more.
The word John uses for “new” is the Greek word “kainos”. Kainos means new as in a new quality; or what is made is superior to what it succeeds. Or the new quality is unprecedented.
The one specific detail he mentions in verse 1 is that the sea, or the oceans, were no more. Apparently in the new heaven and earth there will be no need for the oceans. Other than that John does not describe in further details the new heaven and earth, or new universe.
In the rest of Revelation 21 John will give us many details about the capitol city of the new heaven and the new earth, New Jerusalem.
The New Jerusalem
“And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.” – Revelation 21:2-3
Next John sees the New Jerusalem coming down out of heaven. The rest of Revelation 21 will be John describing the many fantastic things and details he sees in the New Jerusalem. The capitol city of the new heaven and earth, and the eternal dwelling place of God and Jesus.
Paul writes about the new Jerusalem in Hebrews 12.
“But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, 23 and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant” – Hebrews 12:22-24
Revelation 21 – New Heaven And Earth, New Jerusalem
God Dwells With His People
John hears a loud voice coming from God’s throne saying “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.” – Revelation 21:3
The New Jerusalem will be God’s new eternal dwelling place. And Jesus will dwell there as well. And the great multitude of angels.
And God’s people will be there as well. The repentant faithful followers and worshippers of God from the Old Testament. And the repentant faithful followers and witnesses of Jesus from the New Testament. As well as all of the repentant and faithful followers and witnesses of Jesus from the tribulation. All of these will finally be with God and Jesus for eternity.
No More Tears, Death, Mourning, Crying, or Pain
“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” – Revelation 21:4
John says that God will wipe away His people’s tears. And that there will be no more death, mourning, crying, or pain in the eternal new heaven and earth.
This is communicated in other parts of God’s word. Isaiah prophesied about this.
“He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken.” – Isaiah 25:8
And this appears in other parts of God’s word.
“For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” – Revelation 7:17
“So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.” – John 16:22
Revelation 21 – New Heaven And Earth, New Jerusalem
All Things New
“And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6 And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. 7 The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.” – Revelation 21:5-7
God continues to speak to John, and John records what is said in these verses of Revelation 21. God tells John that He is making all things new.
Gone is the decaying old earth, filled with sin, evil, idolatry, hatred, immorality…. And gone is Satan and his demons, and their lies and deception.
It Is Done
“And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.” – Revelation 21:6
God, the Alpha and the Omega, pronounces that “it is done”. The old heaven and earth are gone. Satan and his demons and their efforts to defeat God and Jesus are gone.
And sin and rebellion against God are gone. And gone are all those that refused to repent and follow Jesus.
And the creation of the new heaven and earth, and it’s capitol city, the new Jerusalem, is finished also.

To The One Who Is Thirsty
God tells John “To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.” – Revelation 21:6
Whoever is thirsty God will give from the “spring of the water of life without payment “. Whoever is thirsty God will give eternal life without cost to them, because Jesus has already paid for it with His blood and sacrificial death on the cross.
Isaiah prophesied about whoever is thirsty long ago.
“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. 2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. 3 Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David.” – Isaiah 55:1-3
Isaiah is appealing for people to repent and turn to God.
Jesus also spoke about satisfying thirst with “living water” with the woman at the well.
“Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” – John 4:10-14
What does “the one who is thirsty” mean. Who is Isaiah and Jesus and God talking about?
The one who is thirsty is the person that recognizes their wretched and sinful nature. They recognize that their own righteousness is “as filthy rags”. And that they are separated from God by their sins. And they recognize their need for a Savior and for forgiveness and salvation.

To The One Who Conquers
“The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.” – Revelation 21:7
God tells John that the new heaven and earth, and the new Jerusalem is for those who have conquered. They get to enjoy God’s presence and glory forever in this glorious new place. Because they conquered.
Who is the one who conquers? Conquers what?
Jesus’ Letters To 7 Churches
In Revelation 2 and 3 Jesus had John write letters to 7 churches in Asia Minor.
In Jesus’ letter to the church in Ephesus He wrote:
“To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.” – Revelation 2:7
In His letter to the church in Smyrna Jesus wrote:
“The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death.” – Revelation 2:11
In His letter to the church in Pergamum:
“To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.” – Revelation 2:17
In His letter to the church in Thyatira:
“The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, 27 and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father. 28 And I will give him the morning star.” – Revelation 2:26-28
In Jesus’ letter to the church in Sardis He wrote this:
“The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.” – Revelation 3:5
In His letter to the church in Philadelphia Jesus wrote about how the one who conquers will get to be in God’s temple, or in His presence. And in God’s city, the new Jerusalem that will come down from heaven.
“The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name.” – Revelation 3:12
In Jesus’ letter to the church in Laodicea he wrote:
“The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.” – Revelation 3:21

Who Is The One Who Conquers?
Who then is the one who conquers? John wrote about this in 1 John 5:
“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? – 1 John 5:1-5
John tells us that it is anyone that overcomes the world. The things of world. The sin and idolatry and immorality of the world.
How do you overcome the world? John tells us – through faith in Jesus Christ. And through repentance and faith in Jesus, we overcome our sins and the world. And we overcome the eternal spiritual death and punishment for our sins in the eternal lake of fire.
The Eternal Destiny For Unrepentant Sinners
“But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.” – Revelation 21:8
At the end of Revelation 20 we saw the ultimate destiny for all that rebel against God, and refuse to repent and turn to Jesus for mercy and forgiveness and salvation. The second death. The eternal lake of fire.
God mentions it once more here in Revelation 21. Showing the ones that will not get to dwell in God’s presence and love for eternity in the new heaven and earth, and the new Jerusalem.

Description Of The New Jerusalem
“Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying, “Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, 11 having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12 It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed— 13 on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates.” – Revelation 21:9-13
In the first part of Revelation 21 John sees God and the new Jerusalem coming down from heaven. And he sees the ones who are allowed to dwell with God forever in the new heaven and earth. The ones that were thirsty and that overcame the world through faith in Christ.
Next John is taken by the Holy Spirit with one of the 7 angels that had the 7 bowl judgements. He is taken to the top of a tall mountain, and from there he begins to describe the incredible capitol city of the new heaven and earth. The new Jerusalem.
The new heaven and earth, and the new Jerusalem is the place Jesus promised to His faithful followers.
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” – John 14:1-3
This is the place, the new heaven and earth and the new Jerusalem, that Abraham, by faith, was looking forward to.
“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.” – Hebrews 11:8-10
Shining And Radiant From God’s Glory
“having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.” – Revelation 21:11
The first thing John describes is the glory of God shining or radiating throughout the city. Isaiah prophesied about the new heaven and earth in Isaiah 60.
“The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give you light; but the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your God will be your glory. 20 Your sun shall no more go down, nor your moon withdraw itself; for the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your days of mourning shall be ended.” – Isaiah 60: 19-20
In Revelation 21:23 John says that there is no longer a need for the sun or moon, because God’s glory provides brilliant light throughout.
“And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.” – Revelation 21:23
Revelation 21 – New Heaven And Earth, New Jerusalem
Shining Like A Brilliant Crystal Clear Rare Jewel
John also describes the city as being like a clear crystal rare jewel, like a jasper.
Iaspis is the Greek word used here for jasper. In the Old Testament the Hebrew word used for jasper is yashepheh. The use of these words meant that it was a perfectly clear, exceedingly rare and expensive diamond like jewel.
It is not the same as our modern day opaque jasper stone. It is a perfect and flawless rare jewel, perfectly clear and exceedingly expensive. And the entire city of new Jerusalem is made from it.
The Dimensions Of The Brilliant Shining Crystal Clear City
We know the dimensions of the future new Jerusalem because the angel speaking to John measures the city for him.
“And the one who spoke with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city and its gates and walls. 16 The city lies foursquare, its length the same as its width. And he measured the city with his rod, 12,000 stadia. Its length and width and height are equal.” – Revelation 21:15-16
The city of new Jerusalem is going to have equal dimensions for length, width, and height. The length, width, and height will be 12,000 stadia.
Stadia is an ancient Greek measurement. When converted to miles, 12,000 stadia equals 1400 miles. The spectacular city of new Jerusalem will be 1400 miles long, wide, and high.

More Details About New Jerusalem
Another detail about the city of New Jerusalem is found in Revelation 21:8. Besides being made of acrystal clear diamond like rare jewel, it will also be made of clear and pure gold.
“The wall was built of jasper, while the city was pure gold, like clear glass” – Revelation 21:18
And all of it will be like the most rare and perfect diamond ever found. And also like clear gold. Crystal clear, shining with God’s brilliant glory and light coming from the inside. And radiating brilliant rainbow colors, refracting through the crystal clear city all over the new heavens and the new earth. It will truly be a spectacular place.
And still another amazing detail about New Jerusalem is found in Revelation 21:
“and the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.” – Revelation 21:21
The streets of new Jerusalem will be made of pure gold. And they too will have a shining crystal clear appearance “like transparent glass”.
We have never seen this type of crystal clear transparent pure gold before. This will be one of many incredible new things we will see in new Jerusalem.

A Great High Wall And 12 Gates
“It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed— on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates.” – Revelation 21:12-13
Next John describes how the new Jerusalem has a “great high wall”. And on each wall there are 3 gates. 12 gates total.
And at each gate is an angel. The names of the 12 sons of Israel, previously known as Jacob, were inscribed on the gates.
More About New Jerusalem’s Walls
“He also measured its wall, 144 cubits by human measurement, which is also an angel’s measurement. 18 The wall was built of jasper, while the city was pure gold, like clear glass. 19 The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of jewel. The first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst.” – Revelation 21:17-20
The angel measured new Jerusalem’s 4 walls. 144 cubits. 144 cubits is equal to 216 feet.
Most people assume that John means that the angel measured the height of the walls. But he does not say the angel measured the height. It might mean height, but most likely the angel measured the width of the walls at 216 feet.
Why? Because the height of the city of new Jerusalem will be 1400 miles. A 216 feet high wall would be extremely short for such a massively high and long and wide city. I would agree with others that think that the walls will most likely be 216 feet wide, and most likely 1400 miles high.

Materials The Walls Are Made Of
John sees that the walls are made of the crystal clear jasper or brilliant diamond like jewel. And the foundations of the walls are “adorned with every kind of jewel”. Another spectacular detail of the amazing place that new Jerusalem is going to be.
Then John goes on to list the jewels found in the foundations of new Jerusalem’s walls. Jasper (diamond like), sapphire, agate, emerald, onyx, carnelian, chrysolite, beryl, topaz, chrysoprase, jacinth, and amethyst.”
More About New Jerusalem’s Gates
“And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl” – Revelation 21:21
Another spectacular detail John sees about the 12 gates of the city. Each is made from a single gigantic pearl. Remember the walls, and thus the gates, are most likely 1400 miles high. They will very large gates made from miraculously large pearls. (even if the walls and 12 gates would be 216 feet high, and not 1400 miles high, they still would be spectacular)
Spiritual Significance Of Pearl Gates
This is a beautiful statement about the spiritual significance of the pearl gates written by John Phillips:
“All other precious gems are metals or stones, but a pearl is a gem formed within the oyster. It is the only one formed by living flesh. The humble oyster receives an irritation or a wound, and around the offending article that has penetrated and hurt it, the oyster builds a pearl. The pearl, we might say, is the answer of the oyster to that which injured it. And the glory land is God’s answer in Christ to the wicked men who crucified heaven’s beloved and put Him to open shame. How like God it is to make the gates of the new Jerusalem pearls. The saints as they come and go will be forever reminded as they pass the gates of glory, that access to God’s home is only because of Calvary.”

Inside New Jerusalem
“And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb.” – Revelation 21:22
John goes inside the spectacular capitol city of new Jerusalem next. The first thing he sees?
There is no temple. Revelation 8 shows us that there was a temple in heaven where God’s throne was. There was a golden altar, incense,… like in a temple.
“And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer, and he was given much incense to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar before the throne, 4 and the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel.” – Revelation 8:3-4
And Revelation 11 mentions God’s temple in heaven.
“Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail.” – Revelation 11:19
Why No Temple In The Heaven & Earth And New Jerusalem?
The next verses in Revelation 21 give us the reason there is no need for a temple or a church in the new heaven and earth and in the new Jerusalem.
“And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. 23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.” – Revelation 21:22-23
God and Jesus, in all their glory and splendor will dwell in the new heaven and earth, and in new Jerusalem. Their presence and glory will light up the entire new heaven and earth, and the capitol city. And we will have the joy of dwelling with them for eternity.
Kings Of The Earth And Nations
John continues to describe new Jerusalem. And he mentions the nations. The Greek word ethnē is translated to nations in English. The intent is to show that people from all nations are invited to be a part of the new heaven and earth, and new Jerusalem. Through repentance and faith in Jesus.
“By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, 25 and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. 26 They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. ” – Revelation 21:24-26
And John mentions the kings of the earth will bring their glory into new Jerusalem. And again in verse 26 “They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations”
This means that kings and all people from all the nations will come, and lay down their glory and honor. And give it all to God and Jesus.
It is a similar idea being expressed as the scene we saw in heaven in Revelation 4.
“And whenever the living creatures give glory, honor, and thanks to the One seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before the One seated on the throne, and they worship Him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying: 11 “Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things; by Your will they exist and were created.” – Revelation 4:9-11

Only People Who Repent And Cleansed By Christ Can Enter
John closes Revelation 21 and the description of new Jerusalem with another summary of who will be able to enter the new heaven and earth and new Jerusalem. Earlier John wrote about those that were thirsty. And those that overcame.

Kevin is a former business owner, and current international missions ministry leader with more than four decades of combined business and ministry experience. After building and running a successful business for 23 years, with God’s guidance and blessings, he sold his company to dedicate himself to full-time global missions.
For over 20 years, Kevin and his wife Nancy have led an international missions ministry. Utilizing learned business and financial management skills, as well as knowledge and experience in travel points and miles, to date they have had 51 mission trips to 36 countries in the Caribbean, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
