Revelation 12 – A Woman, A Dragon, And A Baby

In Revelation 1 John has a vision of Jesus and writes a description of what he saw. John is in exile on the island of Patmos for being a faithful witness for Jesus. In Revelation 2 and 3 Jesus has John send letters to 7 churches in Asia Minor. Each church was an existing church in Asia Minor at the time of John’s exile around 95AD. But each letter has applications in our modern day lives and churches.
In Revelation 4 we saw John’s vision or visit to God’s throne. In Revelation 5 we saw the scroll with 7 seals. And that the Lamb, Jesus, was the only One worthy to receive and open the scroll. The scroll represents God’s will and the deed or title of the universe.
Only Jesus is worthy to receive and open the scroll. And to bring on God’s wrath and punishment for Satan, his demons, and for sinners that refuse to repent and believe in Jesus.
Then in Revelation 6 we saw the Lamb, Jesus, open the first 6 of 7 seals of the scroll. Revelation 6 is the beginning of the 7 year  Tribulation, and shows a progression through the first half of the Tribulation and into the 2nd half, known as the Great Tribulation period. And of God’s judgement and punishment of Satan, his demons, and anyone who rebels against God and refuses to repent and bow down to Jesus.
In Revelation 7 we saw a continuation of John’s vision of heaven and God’s throne. Revelation 7 is a break between the opening of the first 6 seals in Revelation 6 and the 7th and final seal in Revelation 8. And we saw 4 angels and the 4 winds of the earth, 144,000 from the 12 tribes of Israel, and a great multitude.
In Revelation 8 we saw Jesus open the 7th seal of the scroll, which is the start of the 7 trumpet judgements of God. This takes place in the 2nd half of the 7 year tribulation, which is known as the Great Tribulation.
Then in Revelation 9 we saw the terrifying 5th and 6th trumpet judgements that God pours out on His enemies. The people that still refused to repent and bow down to Jesus as Lord and Savior.
And in Revelation 10 we saw John’s vision of a mighty angel with an opened scroll with a voice of 7 thunders. This takes place in the break between the 6th and 7th trumpet judgements.
Then in Revelation 11 we saw a continuation of John’s vision of the break between the 6th and 7th trumpet judgements in the final 3 1/2 years of the tribulation, known as the Great tribulation. We studied the 2 witnesses from God in Jerusalem, and the 7th trumpet judgement.
Now we will study John’s vision in Revelation 12.

Revelation 12 – A Woman, A Dragon, And A Baby

A Great Sign In Heaven

“And a great sign appeared in heaven…” – Revelation 12:1
John describes the sign in heaven he sees in his vision as being a great sign. Meaning that what he sees is very large or immensely large. The Greek word for sign is sēmeion. It means a symbol pointing to some reality.
This is telling us that what John sees in this great sign in heaven is symbolic for something real, or of a reality. John is telling us that he is using symbolism to describe real events or real things.

The Setting Of Revelation 12

Revelation 12 takes place right after the 7th angel blows the 7th trumpet in Revelation11. Initiating the 7th and final trumpet judgement near the end of the Great Tribulation.
Revelation 12, 13, and 14 are a break in the chronological order of events of the day of the Lord. In order to describe in greater detail the cast of characters involved in the Great Tribulation, and really in the history of the universe.
Revelation 12 through 14 are focused on the main characters involved in the spiritual warfare that has been occurring since almost the beginning of God’s creation. The spiritual war between God and His enemies.
John’s vision in Revelation 12 describes several of the main characters involved in the spiritual warfare between God and His enemies. In the first 6 verses of Revelation 12 John describes events and the main characters involved in those events that occur between near the beginning of creation until the tribulation.
Then in the rest of Revelation 12 through Revelation 14 John describes events and the main characters involved in the final half of the tribulation, or in the 3 1/2 years of the Great Tribulation.
In Revelation 13 and 14 John will introduce and describe 2 other characters involved in the Great Tribulation. Then in Revelation 15 and 16 John will continue the chronological order of the events that take place after the 7th trumpet judgement begins.

Revelation 12 – A Woman, A Dragon, And A Baby

A Woman Clothed With The Sun, Moon, Stars

revelation 12, woman in revelation 12, red dragon in revelation 12, michael and angels fighting satan, book of revelation, israel in revelation

“And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.” – Revelation 12:1
John describes a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and a crown of 12 stars. The woman is not a literal woman. The woman is a symbol of something real or of a reality.

Who or What Does The Woman Represent?

Who or what does the woman in John’s vision represent? Many believe that the woman represents God’s church in the New Testament church age. Others believe the woman represents the Jews of Israel, or God’s chosen people.
One clue is how the woman in clothed. She is clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and a crown of 12 stars.
There is a similar description of the sun, moon, and stars in a dream Joseph had in Genesis 37.
“Then he dreamed another dream and told it to his brothers and said, “Behold, I have dreamed another dream. Behold, the sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” 10 But when he told it to his father and to his brothers, his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves to the ground before you?” 11 And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying in mind.” – Genesis 37:9-11
Notice what Joseph’s father Jacob, renamed Israel, said about his dream.
“What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves to the ground before you?” – Genesis 37:10
The sun in the dream is Joseph’s father Jacob, or Israel. The moon is Joseph’s mother Rachel. And the 11 stars are Joseph’s 11 brothers. The 12th star is Joseph, and a total of 12 stars represents Jacob’s sons and the 12 tribes of Israel.
After Joseph later on became 2nd in command in Egypt, under only Pharaoh, they all did come to Egypt and bow down to Joseph. It appears that the woman in John’s vision represents Israel, God’s chosen people.

The Woman Represents Israel

The Woman, symbolic of God’s chosen people Israel, is clothed with the sun. This is symbolic of the glory that will be given to the redeemed people of Israel that turn to the Lord in the Great Tribulation. Previous chapters in Revelation (like Revelation 7) and other various Bible verses show that Israel will be redeemed. And all people, from Israel and all nations, that are redeemed will be clothed in brilliant white garments.
The 12 stars in her crown represents the redeemed people from the 12 tribes of Israel. Remember in Revelation 7 we saw the 144,000 Jewish witnesses from the 12 tribes of Israel. They and the 2 witnesses we saw in Revelation 11 will preach the Gospel and there will be a great multitude that repent and turn to the Lord Jesus from Israel and from all nations.

Revelation 12 – A Woman, A Dragon, And A Baby

The Woman Is Pregnant

“She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth.” – Revelation 12:2
The woman in John’s vision is pregnant. Crying out in birth pains and agony. Later in Revelation 12:5 John tells us that the woman gives birth.
“She gave birth to a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron…” – Revelation 12:5

Who Is The Woman’s Child?

The woman, who is a symbol of a reality or something real, gives birth to a male child who will rule all the nations with a rod of iron. It is not hard to figure out that the woman’s male child is Jesus.
In Jesus’ letter to the church in Thyatira in Revelation 2, He says to His faithful followers that whoever will conquer (overcome sin and the world) He will reward them with the privilege to reign with Him in His kingdom.
“The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, 27 and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father. ” – Revelation 2:26-27

The Woman’s Child Will Rule With A Rod Of Iron

revelation 12, jesus reigns with rod of iron, the baby in revelation 12, book of revelation
And this is shown in Revelation 19:
“Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. 12 His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. 13 He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. 14 And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. 15 From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.” – Revelation 19:11-16
Jesus is obviously the One who will reign with a rod of iron. And The King of Kings.

Revelation 12 – A Woman, A Dragon, And A Baby

Where Does Jesus Come From?

We know that Jesus was born a Jew in Israel. And that He came from the lineage of King David.
In God’s covenant promise to Abraham in Genesis12, He promised to make him a great nation. And that He will bless him, and that “all the families or nations of earth will be blessed. “
“And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Jesus is the blessing that came out of Israel. To bless mankind from all nations with salvation, and a restored relationship with God, and eternal life in heaven. And the reward to reign with Him in His kingdom.
Thus it makes the most sense that the woman in John’s vision represents Israel.

Another Sign In John’s Vision

“And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads seven diadems.” – Revelation 12:3

Revelation 12 – A Woman, A Dragon, And A Baby

A Red Dragon With 7 Heads & 10 Horns

revelation 12, woman in revelation 12, red dragon in revelation 12, michael and angels fighting satan, book of revelation, israel in revelation

“And another sign” means that John is using symbolism to describe what he sees next in his vision. What reality or real thing could John be describing by saying a great red dragon with 7 heads, 10 horns, and 7 diadems on his heads?
There are always prophecies and clues in the Bible that reveal what will happen in the end times and the day of the Lord. Daniel had a vision about 4 beasts in Daniel 7.
“These four great beasts are four kings who shall arise out of the earth. 18 But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, forever and ever.’ 19 “Then I desired to know the truth about the fourth beast, which was different from all the rest, exceedingly terrifying, with its teeth of iron and claws of bronze, and which devoured and broke in pieces and stamped what was left with its feet, 20 and about the ten horns that were on its head, and the other horn that came up and before which three of them fell, the horn that had eyes and a mouth that spoke great things, and that seemed greater than its companions. 21 As I looked, this horn made war with the saints and prevailed over them, 22 until the Ancient of Days came, and judgment was given for the saints of the Most High, and the time came when the saints possessed the kingdom.” – Daniel 7:17-22
The first 3 beasts in Daniel’s vision described the Babylon empire, the Medo Persian empire, and the Greek empire. The 4th beast represented the Roman Empire.
As is often the case in Old Testament prophecies, the 4 beasts represented empires in the not too distant future. And the 4th beast in Daniel’s vision represents a kingdom in the distant future. Or in this case the end times and tribulation.
Daniel’s 4th beast has 10 horns or crowns, symbolic of kings, on it’s head. This is Satan, and the 10 horns show that his worldwide kingdom in the tribulation will have 10 kings under him.
This is similar to John’s vision of the dragon in Revelation 12:3. Satan is a spiritual being that is God’s enemy. The dragon is only symbolic language to represent a very real and terrible spiritual enemy of God.
The seven heads with crowns indicates that he has been the ruler of all the kingdoms of the world. Past, present, and future.
And the 10 horns show that his worldwide kingdom in the tribulation will be divided into 10 region with 10 kings under him. Satan will rule the world until the 7th trumpet judgement.

Revelation 12 – A Woman, A Dragon, And A Baby

More About The Red Dragon

“His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child he might devour it.” – Revelation 12:4
When Satan became rebellious against God and wanted to be god and rule the universe, he wast cast out of heaven. And he took 1/3 of the angels with him, which would become his demon army. And he has been warring against God, His angels, and His people ever since.
When God sent Jesus into the world to save all mankind, Satan desired to destroy Jesus and stop God’s plan of salvation for the people of the world.
His first effort to devour or kill Jesus was with King Herod.
“Now when they (the wise men) had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.” – Matthew 2:13-15

A Place To Protect The Woman Prepared By God

“and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, in which she is to be nourished for 1,260 days.” – Revelation 12:6
Satan, represented by the symbolic dragon, is going to try to destroy the woman, or Israel. We know that this is talking about during the Great Tribulation because it tells us that God has a place prepared to nourish Israel. For 1260 days.
The 1260 days is the time of the 3 1/2 years Great Tribulation. So Satan is going to try to destroy Israel in the Great Tribulation.
Jesus talks about this in Matthew 24.
“So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel (at the halfway point of the 7 year tribulation) standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let the one who is on the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, 18 and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. 19 And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! 20 Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be.” – Matthew 24:15-22

Old Testament Prophecies

Ezekiel’s prophecy in Ezekiel 38 is also related to Satan trying to destroy Israel in the “latter days” through the kingdoms of the north, God and Magog.
“Therefore, son of man, prophesy, and say to Gog, Thus says the Lord God: On that day when my people Israel are dwelling securely, will you not know it? 15 You will come from your place out of the uttermost parts of the north, you and many peoples with you, all of them riding on horses, a great host, a mighty army. 16 You will come up against my people Israel, like a cloud covering the land. In the latter days I will bring you against my land, that the nations may know me, when through you, O Gog, I vindicate my holiness before their eyes.” – Ezekiel 38:14-16
But according to Revelation 12:6 and Matthew 24 God will have a place in the wilderness prepared to shelter and nourish His people Israel.

Revelation 12 – A Woman, A Dragon, And A Baby

Possible Location Of The Wilderness Location

revelation 12, place in the wilderness for israel, god provides a place in the wilderness, great tribulation

Isaiah 16 may provide a possible location of the place in the wilderness that God provides to nourish and take care of His chosen people Israel that flee in the Great Tribulation.
“Send the lamb to the ruler of the land, from Sela, by way of the desert, to the mount of the daughter of Zion… let the outcasts of Moab sojourn among you; be a shelter to them from the destroyer.
When the oppressor is no more, and destruction has ceased, and he who tramples underfoot has vanished from the land, 5 then a throne will be established in steadfast love, and on it will sit in faithfulness in the tent of David one who judges and seeks justice and is swift to do righteousness.” – Isaiah 16:1,4-5
Sela is also called Petra. Petra is located in the Old Testament ancient kingdom of Moab. Today Petra is located in the country of Jordan.
Petra and Sela both mean “rock”. It is an appropriate name, since much of the city is carved into sandstone cliffs. Petra is located about 50 miles south of the Dead Sea and is in the desert, or wilderness.
Petra’s main access is via a narrow crevice, which winds for about a mile through mountainous terrain. This provides an excellent natural defense for Petra.
Petra is very possibly the place that God has prepared to shelter and nourish His people Israel when they flee the antichrist in the Great Tribulation.

Revelation 12 – A Woman, A Dragon, And A Baby

A War In Heaven

revelation 12, woman in revelation 12, red dragon in revelation 12, michael and angels fighting satan, book of revelation, israel in revelation

“Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, 8 but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.” – Revelation 12:7-9
Revelation 12:7-9 is describing a different future event than what takes place in Revelation 12:3-4.
“And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads seven diadems. 4 His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and cast them to the earth.” – Revelation 12:3-4
Revelation 12:3-4 describe when Satan was cast out of heaven, along with 1/3 of the angels, or ” stars”, that followed him in his rebellion against God. That took place soon after the creation of all things.
Then later in Revelation 12:7-9 John is describing a different event concerning Satan and his demons. A future event late in the Great Tribulation. The same future event being described in Revelation 9:1, whenthe5th trumpet judgement will occur.
“And the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star fallen from heaven to earth, and he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit.” – Revelation 9:1
The star fallen to the earth in Revelation 9:1is Satan when he is forever kicked out of earth for trying to defeat God and His army of angels.
In Revelation 12:7 John sees Satan and his demons warring against God and His angels. Then in Revelation 12:8-9 John sees that Satan and his “angels “, or demons, will be defeated and then cast down to the earth for a short time until Jesus begins His reign.

Satan & His Demons Defeated

“And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.” – Revelation 12:9
After Satan and his demons try to fight against and defeat God, they are forever cast out of heaven. And never allowed to enter into God’s presence to accuse God’s people, or anything else.
It is almost time for Satan, and his demons, and anyone else that refuses to repent and bow down to King Jesus to receive what they deserve. The full wrath and judgment and punishment of God.

Revelation 12 – A Woman, A Dragon, And A Baby

Almost Time For Jesus To Reign In His Kingdom

“And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. 11 And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.” – Revelation 12:10-11
After seeing Satan and his demons forever cast out of heaven and down to earth, John hears a loud voice declaring that “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come”.
After the 7th trumpet is blown it is time for the rapidly occurring final 7 bowl judgements to begin (in Revelation 15 and 16). And the long awaited time for Jesus to take over the reign of the earth and the universe.
And also the culmination of the day of the Lord.
“Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!” – Revelation 12:12
After Satan’s defeat and he is cast down to earth, John tells us that he is going to take it out on whoever has survived the terrible seal judgements and trumpet judgements up until this point in the Great Tribulation.
And Satan appears to know that the end is near. And that his final fate and God’s final judgement and punishment is coming soon.

Revelation 12 – A Woman, A Dragon, And A Baby

Satan Will Pursue & Try To Destroy Israel

“And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. 14 But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle so that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to the place where she is to be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time.” – Revelation 12:13-14
Satan wants to pour out his wrath upon anyone that is still alive at this point in time. But he really has a special hatred for God’s chosen people Israel, represented in John’s vision by the woman. And for anyone that repents andcfollows Jesus. And he will try to destroy them.

A Time Of Distress For Jacob

Long ago the prophet Jeremiah spoke about this terrible time for Israel in the Great Tribulation. Here called it “a time of distress for Jacob “.
“These are the words that the Lord spoke concerning Israel and Judah: “Thus says the Lord: We have heard a cry of panic, of terror, and no peace. 6 Ask now, and see, can a man bear a child? Why then do I see every man with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor? Why has every face turned pale? 7 Alas! That day is so great there is none like it; it is a time of distress for Jacob; yet he shall be saved out of it.” – Jeremiah 30:5-7
John tells us that the people of Israel will flee from Satan into the wilderness. To the place in the wilderness that God prepares for them. And where God will protect and nourish them during the Great Tribulation. The 1260 days mentioned in Revelation 12:6.
“and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, in which she is to be nourished for 1,260 days.” – Revelation 12:6
The 1260 days are the same Great Tribulation time mentioned in Revelation 12:14 as “for a time, and times, and half a time”.

Revelation 12 – A Woman, A Dragon, And A Baby

Wings Of An Eagle

“But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle so that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness” – Revelation 12:14
The phrase “the wings of an eagle” is used several times in God’s word to describe God’s protection of His chosen people. Like when God rescued Israel from Egypt and cared for them in the wilderness.
“He found him in a desert land, and in the howling waste of the wilderness; he encircled him, he cared for him, he kept him as the apple of his eye. 11 Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, that flutters over its young, spreading out its wings, catching them, bearing them on its pinions, 12 the Lord alone guided him.” – Deuteronomy 32:10-12
There is some speculation that the “wings of an eagle” and “that she might fly into the wilderness” are an indication that the redeemed people of Israel will escape to the wilderness by a great air lift operation. This is possible, but it is only speculation.

Satan Will Try To Destroy Israel When They Are In The Wilderness

“The serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with a flood. 16 But the earth came to the help of the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river that the dragon had poured from his mouth. 17 Then the dragon became furious with the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus. And he stood on the sand of the sea.” – Revelation 12:15-17
The language John uses to describe Satan’s effort to destroy the people of Israel that have been saved in the Great Tribulation, once they have fled to the wilderness is interesting. John says “The serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with a flood.”
In Jeremiah 46 he talks about how Egypt “rises like the Nile river, like rivers whose waters surge. Surge like a flood. But he is not literally talking about a river that floods. Jeremiah is talking about and invading army that destroys and kills, like a flood does.
“Egypt rises like the Nile, like rivers whose waters surge. He said, ‘I will rise, I will cover the earth, I will destroy cities and their inhabitants.’ 9 Advance, O horses, and rage, O chariots! Let the warriors go out: men of Cush and Put who handle the shield, men of Lud, skilled in handling the bow. 10 That day is the day of the Lord God of hosts, a day of vengeance, to avenge himself on his foes.” – Jeremiah 46:8-10
Psalm 124 also uses this type of symbolic language to describe God’s protection of Israel from their enemies.
“If the Lord had not been on our side— let Israel say— 2 if the Lord had not been on our side when people attacked us, 3 they would have swallowed us alive when their anger flared against us; 4 the flood would have engulfed us, the torrent would have swept over us, 5 the raging waters would have swept us away.” – Psalm 124:1-5
Most likely John in his vision is describing how Satan will try to destroy the redeemed people of Israel that are hiding in the wilderness with an army.
But Revelation 12:16 John shows that Satan’s attempts to destroy the redeemed people of Israel in the wilderness will ultimately fail. Due to God’s protection.

Revelation 12 – A Woman, A Dragon, And A Baby

Satan Will Try To Destroy Gentile Believers Too

After Satan’s failed attempts to destroy the redeemed from Israel, John describes how he will try to war against and destroy all other believers during the Great Tribulation. These are “those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus” in Revelation 12:17
“Then the dragon became furious with the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus.” – Revelation 12:17
Next week we will continue our in depth study of the book of Revelation in Revelation 13.
