Leaving Your Comfort Zone

Leaving Your Comfort Zone

Leaving your comfort zone involves stepping beyond familiar routines and safe spaces to embrace new challenges and experiences. This process often triggers discomfort and uncertainty. But it can lead to personal growth, increased resilience, and expanded horizons.

And it will certainly lead to new ways to experience God in personal ways. And new opportunities to see God at work, and see His mighty power and glory.

Leaving Your Comfort Zone

Leaving your comfort zone is a difficult thing to do for many Christians. Sooner or later Jesus is going to lead you to do something that is not comfortable. And He will ask you to do some things that you will fail at unless He shows up and empowers you.

Jesus’ command to “follow Me and I will make you fishers of men” in Matthew 4:19 is a good example. Another good example is the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

To tell others about Jesus is something many people are afraid to do. Or they are at least very uncomfortable or anxious about doing it. And yet Jesus was not asking us to do this, He was commanding us.

Following Jesus Means Leaving Your Comfort Zone

“Lord, if it’s you, Peter replied, tell me to come to you on the water. Come, he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out Lord save me !” – Matthew 14:28-29

The main context of this message is about faith (or lack of) in the Lord Jesus. But this event can also represent something else. Most people are creatures of habit. And most have a comfort zone that they do not like to get out of. Our comfort zone can be a real hindrance to becoming a true disciple of Jesus. And to truly following and obeying Him. Let’s say the boat in these verses represents our comfort zone.

You Need To Leave Your Comfort Zone to Join Jesus

If you want to go to where Jesus is and join Him in the work He is doing you will need to leave the boat. Leave the boat means leaving your comfort zone. If you are not willing to do this, you will miss the opportunity to join God in His work. And you will miss the opportunity to see the Lord do great things and show who He is.

The disciples saw Jesus for who He really is. The One True God with power and authority over all things in the heavens and on earth. And all power and authority over our enemy Satan also.  The disciples in the boat worshipped Jesus after they saw Him display His power and authority in Matthew 14:33. “And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “You are certainly God’s Son !”

Leaving Your Comfort Zone

What Is Hindering You From Leaving Your Comfort Zone ?

So what is hindering you from joining God in His work ? And seeing Him for who He really is ? A fear of witnessing ? A fear or an unwillingness to try new things ? Tradition ? A lack of faith ? A stubborn refusal to adjust your will to His ? An unwillingness to move away from family or friends if the Lord so leads ? An unwillingness to move to another country, if God so leads ? Unless you are willing to get out of your “boat” you will miss the Lord and what He is doing. And you will not grow in your personal experiential knowledge of Him.

It is one thing to read about Jesus in your Bible. It is a whole other thing to personally experience Jesus in real and personal ways in your life. And in the lives of others around you. Seeing and experiencing Jesus and His great power in and around your life is what He wants for you. That is part of the abundant life He wants for you (see John 10:10).
