Are you truly following Jesus? To truly follow Jesus you need to be a “fisher of men”. This refers to Jesus’ command and call to his disciples in the New Testament.
Where Jesus invites and calls them to follow Him and spread the Gospel message to others. In Matthew 4:19, Jesus tells His disciples “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men”.
Meaning they would go on to help bring others into a saving personal relationship with Jesus. This highlights the God given mission of Christians to spread the gospel and lead others to Christ. And making disciples and growing God’s kingdom. It emphasizes the importance of outreach, compassion, and sharing the love and teachings of Jesus with others.

Important Questions About Following Jesus & Being Fishers Of Men
Was Jesus just talking to the original disciples who would become the “apostles” or the heads of the new church in the book of Acts ? Or was Jesus talking to and commanding all of us to follow Him and be fishers of men and share the Gospel with others?
If you look in most churches today, you would think that Jesus was only commanding pastors, or church leaders, or missionaries to carry out the work of sharing the Gospel. Sadly, in many churches today no one is sharing or preaching the Gospel, not even pastors.
The answer to the question of who was Jesus talking to is clearly found in God’s Word.
Read Acts 8:1,4 – it says that “a great persecution came against the church”. The new church was in Jerusalem at the time, very shortly after Jesus dies and rose again to heaven in Acts 1.
Acts 8:1 “On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.“
Acts 8:4 “Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went.”
Acts 11:19-20 “Now those who had been scattered by the persecution that broke out when Stephen was killed traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, spreading the word only among Jews. Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus.”
Acts 11:21 “The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.“
Acts 8:1 says that the apostles, the leaders and pastors of the church, stayed in Jerusalem. And the rest of the church, the ordinary people in the church, were scattered to other places.
Now watch what happens in verse 4: “Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went“. Preached the word in this verse means they preached the Gospel everywhere they went. You can see this in Acts 11:19-21.
And because of their faithful obedience to Jesus’ commands, God empowered them and blessed them to reach many lost people with the Gospel.
Everyone in the church understood that Jesus called and commanded all of His followers to go and share the Gospel with others. And they all faithfully obeyed Jesus. And God was able to use them to reach a great number of lost people.
This could and should be happening today too! What is it not?

Follow Jesus & Be A Fisher Of Men
Every member of the church, all of the regular people of the church, faithfully shared the Gospel. Because they understood clearly that Jesus commanded all of His followers to be “fishers of men”, not just the pastors or leaders of the church.
Because of their faithfulness, even though they suffered and some even died for it, God was able to empower and use them to reach many lost people for Jesus.
“And the LORD added to their number daily those who were being saved.” – Acts 2:47
“The LORD’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the LORD.” – Acts 11:21

Be A Fisher of Men
We want to encourage you to be faithful to Jesus. And to obey His command to be a fisher of men. Someone who is actively sharing God’s love and the Gospel wherever you are and go.
If you don’t know how to share the Gospel, there are many tools to help you. Such as Billy Graham’s Steps to Peace With God Gospel tract, or many others.
Notice that Jesus doesn’t say “try your best to be a fisher of men or witness”. He says “Follow me and I will make you a fisher of men.” Jesus is saying that if you follow Him, or if you will obey Him, HE will empower you to share the Gospel with others. He will be there with you, through His Holy Spirit, to empower you and give to you whatever you need to be His witness or “fisher of men”.
If you will do your part and obey Jesus and share the Gospel, the Holy Spirit will empower you:Â
He will give you power to share the Gospel, and His love & power to BE a faithful witness:
Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
If you don’t know what to say or are anxious:
Matthew 10:19-20 “…do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.”
If you are afraid to share Jesus with others:
Acts 4:29-31 (early disciples’ prayer for courage & boldness after Peter and John were arrested and threatened for sharing Jesus) “Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus. After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.“
